Meet, Slack & Google Drive. New faces with lots of experience. Calls on distance. By accident leaving an online meeting because I clicked on an added link. Cloud applications. This is a summary of my first week in a whole new surrounding.

After a couple of interesting conversations I started working at Levarne on April 14th. Which means; not at the office, but from home. It’s an unordinary time to start with a new job. But at a techcompany it is surely possible. We start the day with a digital meeting where we discuss what’s in planning for the following week. It’s a little strange to meet your colleagues in this way instead with a good cup of coffee (and with a Dutch sausage roll, so I’ve been told) but hopefully that will happen soon. During the meeting I’ve been confronted with terms I don’t have any knowledge of. My background is mostly in events and hospitality so it’s going to be a challenge to get to know the IT language.

One of the first things that I had to get used to; the online work environment. For a techcompany in cloud applications a sure deal. But I missed my familiar offline Microsoft settings and I needed to adjust to this new work environment. For example, I noticed a small irritation from my colleague because, stubborn as I was, I kept working in an offline Excel sheet and afterwards I didn’t know how to save it in Drive and send it in a separate attachment. But along the way I noticed many benefits of working in an online environment. Everybody can work in the same document at the same time and there’s no hussle with external servers, which caused multiple problems in the past.

The biggest challenge for the next couple of weeks is going to be to learn the IT slang as quickly as possible. API, POS, splash screens.. Just some words that say 0 to me. Luckily my colleagues are more than willing to help me explain all these things. I saw some flows and processes so that I get a better understanding of the different kinds of applications, and I can call them at any time for an extensive explanation of the content. And for all the other unclear terms; Google serves to be your best friend for this as well.

It’s nice to see that for every project there are different disciplines necessary to come to a great result. It’s truly a team effort. And what I also like is that Levarne is a small company with a lot of opportunities. The base is there; creating cloud applications in a fast, unique, result-driven approach. Next step is to show the rest of the Netherlands (and beyond) how we are going to do this.
